In 2033 the Church will celebrate two thousand years of the Redemption, won by the Passion, death and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Pope Francis named this anniversary in Spes non confundit, the bull that proclaimed the Jubilee of 2025. He wrote that the Holy Year would orient the way towards 2033.
On 29 November 2025, at an ecumenical meeting in Istanbul during the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, Pope Leo XIV invited Christian leaders “to journey together on the spiritual journey leading to the Jubilee of Redemption in 2033, with the prospect of a return to Jerusalem, to the Upper Room.” On 30 June 2026 he renewed this hope before a delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, asking that all Christian denominations make the journey together.
The Church has kept this mystery before, in the extraordinary Holy Years of 1933 under Pius XI and 1983 under St John Paul II. The programme and dates for 2033 are still to be announced. Evangelii Network Japan will share news as Rome publishes it.
