The University Pastoral Office of the Diocese of Rome, together with Rome’s Catholic universities, has launched a series of public meetings titled “La Magnifica humanitas nel tempo dell’IA” (“Magnifica humanitas in the Age of AI”). The series takes as its starting point the four principles of the Church’s social doctrine that Pope Leo XIV highlights in his encyclical Magnifica humanitas as reference points for the challenges of artificial intelligence: the common good, solidarity, subsidiarity and social justice. In the encyclical, the Pope encouraged universities to give these principles new energy in the face of the digital revolution (cf. MH 47).
The opening “Dialogue in the Cathedral” was scheduled for 29 October 2026 at 18:00 in the Basilica of St John Lateran, in the presence of the Cardinal Vicar, Baldo Reina. Speakers were listed from LUMSA, Campus Bio-Medico University, the European University of Rome and the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, with RAI journalist Benedetta Rinaldi as moderator.
The dialogue then moves to the universities, with one meeting per principle: “Peace and international cooperation” (the common good) at LUMSA on 2 December 2026; “Fragility and care” (solidarity) at Campus Bio-Medico on 3 March 2027; “Freedom and participation” (subsidiarity) at the European University of Rome on 17 March 2027; and “Young people and addictions” (social justice) at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart on 15 April 2027. According to the diocese, all meetings are open to the public.
